“As Americans continue to live longer, Alzheimer’s disease is expected to skyrocket from the current 5.3 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050.” Alzheimer’s Association.

How do we protect our memory challenged seniors from wandering and becoming lost? The Alzheimer’s Association offers two programs (under Safety Center tab at website) to help keep our seniors safe, active and independent as long as possible; and give family/caregivers peace of mind.

The Medic Alert + Safe Return option is a 24-hour nationwide emergency response service for individuals who wander or have a medical emergency. Family members purchase an ID bracelet or pendant which is engraved with their senior’s personalized health information as well as a 24-hour toll free emergency response number. The family member/caregiver calls a 24-hour toll free number to report a lost senior; a nationwide community support network is activated, including contact with local Alzheimer’s Association chapters and law enforcement agencies; when your senior is found, glancing at the ID bracelet or pendant provides immediate vital medical information and a 24-hour toll free number to call to notify the emergency response team. They call the family members on the contact list. Arrangements are made to reunite you and your wandering senior.

Avoid the panic of driving around block after block, coordinating by cell phone with family and neighbors who are also driving around block after block, searching desperately for your loved one who has wandered off. The Medic Alert + Safe Return Program is affordable and doesn’t require expensive devices or technical expertise. Put your heart at ease and keep your senior safe!
