Travel, earn, learn, and contribute!

Oyster Worldwide, a gap year company, was founded by Roger Salwey in 1999 and is based in rural East Sussex. They send travelers abroad to 11 different countries through volunteer and paid placement opportunities. Oyster Worldwide commits to responsible travel that minimizes the impact on the environment. Oyster differs from other companies in that they make sure that their projects need and want volunteers, and ensure their ‘gappers’ are happy, safe, and fulfilled.

Oyster Worldwide provides first class support for participants and features pre-departure courses before sending small groups for placements with experienced and caring overseas staff who are dedicated UK destination managers for each group. A gap year offers boomers unique opportunities to go to diverse destinations and experience new cultures, challenge themselves, and meet out of the ordinary people. Boomer kids can join in on the fun and the only requirement is that they must be 18 years of age to obtain a Canadian or Australian visa. Projects include teaching, orphanage child care, healthcare and hospital work, animal conservation, adult education, women’s literacy/employment groups, HIV/AIDS education and care, refugee care, community center assistance in shanty towns, and sports coaching in the fabulous locales of Brazil, Chile, Kenya, India, Jordan, Nepal, Romania, Tanzania, Zambia, and South Africa.

We love this website whose current paid opportunities can have boomers working remote Aussie outback farms rounding up sheep and cattle, mending fences, and picking crops. Upon arrival, there’s one day to explore Brisbane followed by three days at famous Rainbow Beach. At the end of your commitment, you’ll have earned enough to finance your trip and surf at the beach again. Sign us up! Perhaps you would prefer to work in a bar, restaurant, or cafe in the cosmopolitan city of Sydney and enjoy free-time activities like surf lessons, coastal and city tours, roof terrace BBQs, and canoeing around the coves and beaches. We can’t resist – the world is ours and your oyster!
