“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”-Gandhi

TOMS was founded in 2006 on the simple premise that for every pair of shoes you purchase, they will give a pair of shoes to a child in need – “One for One.” A trip to Argentina was the epiphany for founder and “Chief Shoe Giver,” Blake Mycoskie.  He saw barefoot children at risk of soil-transmitted diseases through their bare feet threatening their health and not allowing them the opportunity to go to school. Motivated by the Gandhi quote, Mycoskie recognized that by wearing shoes, these impoverished children’s lives were improved physically and cognitively. Mycoskie realized the traditional Argentine alpargata shoe offered a simple, revolutionary product and reinvented the alpargata for the U.S. market while setting out to make his mission a reality – a better tomorrow by taking compassionate action today.

TOMS sold 10,000 pairs of shoes its first year, were proud recipients of the Secretary of State’s 2009 Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE) presented by Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton,  and honored with the prestigious People’s Design Award from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution. In its third year, the TOMS movement involved young people through Campus Clubs and internships. TOMS Community stays active through Facebook and Twitter.  In 2008, college students were responsible for starting the first One Day Without Shoes.  This year, over a quarter-million people went barefoot and over 1600 barefoot events took place globally. “One Day Without Shoes” raises awareness of children growing up barefoot and the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child’s life. In September 2010, TOMS gave the “One Millionth Pair” of new shoes to a child in need. TOMS gives new shoes responsibly in over 20 countries and works with charitable partners who incorporate shoes into their health, education, hygiene, and community development programs making sure there aren’t adverse socio-economic effects and ensuring sustainable giving. Mycoskie is passionate about inspiring young people with the hope of seeing a future full of socially minded businesses and consumers.
