Situated in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and just a short drive from Lake Tahoe, Royal Gorge is North America’s largest cross-country ski resort. With an average snowfall of 600 inches, Royal Gorge has a base elevation of 5,800 feet and high elevation of 7,400 feet with a vertical drop of 1,600 feet. This adds up to 9,172 skiable acres, and 90 trails (28 novice, 46 intermediate, 16 advanced), each of which is 20-feet wide with two diagonal stride tracks, and a skating lane between them. Royal Gorge has the largest cross-country grooming fleet in the world which allows for the 330 kilometer (over 205 miles) track system to be continuously groomed. Whew!
Open mid-November – April, cross-country skiers enjoy striding, skating, diagonal stride, snow shoeing and telemarking. Boomer families will love weekly events like January’s easy 2-hour Full Moon Snowshoe Tour for beginners and accompanied by certified guides. Intermediate/Advanced racers can improve their confidence, control, and speed skills with the Downhill Specialized Technique Clinic. February events include the Racing Gnome Snow Run, a 10k snowshoe run, great for any and all fitness buffs. Who doesn’t want to be a racing snow gnome! The Ski the Huts Tour provides breathtaking views while you skate and glide your way to all of Royal Gorge’s ski huts to rejuvenate and warm chilly fingers and toes. Families can participate in private lessons or group classes taught by PSIA certified instructors. These classes range from basic striding for the beginner to the advanced skate-skiing. Explore any part of the resort with the 2-hour guided Adventure Ski Tour and drop off 6-12 year olds at the Kid’s Camp when you feel the urge to ski solo.
First class accommodations can be found at historic, turn-of-the-century Rainbow Lodge, situated along the Yuba River on Donner Summit. You can ski-in and ski-out for immediate access to Royal Gorge’s trails from peaceful Ice Lakes Lodge.
