Rent an island to savor the solitude!

A major flame-out from a lucrative entrepreneurial career in cable television led to Richard Evanson’s  purchase of the 500-acre, barren and uninhabited island of Nanuya Levu in the Yasawa Islands of Fiji in 1972. Arriving on the island completely overrun by wild goats and with worldly goods consisting of a generator, refrigerator, and a tent, Evanson embarked upon a new life journey to restore the land and build a home. He employed local villagers to plant hundreds of trees and renamed his new island Turtle Island. The Blue Lagoon was filmed here, and in 1980, he opened Turtle Island Resort to the public.

Evanson’s commitment to sustainable tourism has earned him many awards. Successful projects include planting more than 500,000 trees over a 30-year period; preservation of mangroves and coconut groves; introduction of freshwater ponds to encourage bird life; establishing a four-acre hydroponic and organic vegetable garden; opening medical and dental clinics to treat  the local children and villagers; founding the Turtle Release Program to help save threatened Green and Hawksbill turtles; and, operation of a secondary school on the island to educate young people from local villages. Evanson also established the Yasawas Community Foundation in 1992 to generate funds for projects that include health, transportation, education, and the development of cultural activities in the community and villages.

Turtle Island Fiji is remote and exotic with 14 breath-taking private beaches and luxurious world-class accommodations for 28 guests or 14 couples. This all-inclusive, tropical paradise can be rented for a week at a time and guarantees complete privacy and unparalleled service.  Each cottage or “bure” has its own personal concierge, and your Bure Mama is on call 24/7. Kids 5 and under have a personal Nanny, while kids 6 and over have their own playmate or Bula Buddy.

A leisurely orientation tour by electric cart around the island on trails marked by vibrant red hibiscus eases you into the slow, sublime rhythms of the island. Wander through the exotic orchid house. Stroll through the impressive four-acre organic garden that produces 90% of the resort’s herbs, fruits, and vegetables. Snorkel, scuba dive, sport fish, swim, kayak, sail, and take romantic sunset cruises in the pristine turquoise waters. Horseback ride, picnic, walk, and hike along rugged, volcanic cliffs or through tropical forests and lush highlands. No high rises here! After all the activity, what better way to relax than a complimentary Lomi-Lomi massage.

Dining can be dreamy meals under the stars or just downright delightful picnics on your own private beach. Succulent lobster, tender Australian beef, native fruits, and island-grown organic vegetables paired with fine wines and champagnes from around the world provide delectable feasts. Immerse yourself in the musical and cultural heritage of the island natives.
