You are the only child of a precious, frail, widowed mother living on the opposite coast. While being an only child had its benefits in the years living at home, now with a family of your own requiring your attention and focus, you feel the immense stress and trauma of orchestrating your mother’s cross country move from her home of 50 years to a skilled care facility near your home. How do you sort through her belongings, treasures and memories, distribute and dispose, all from a great distance or in one quick weekend away from home? What about preparing her home for sale and listing it with a realtor?

Founded in 2002 and located in Hinsdale, IL, the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM) is a non-profit professional association of 600 senior move managers serving the U.S. and Canada, dedicated to assisting seniors and their families with the physical and emotional demands of downsizing, relocating, or modifying homes for aging in place. The member companies are run by professionals who have backgrounds in social work, healthcare, project management, technology and marketing. Although services vary by location (just input your loved one’s location to find a local senior move company professional) most senior move managers assist with the following:

  • Developing an overall move or age-in-place plan
  • Organizing, sorting and downsizing
  • Customizing floor plans
  • Arranging for the profitable disposal of unwanted items
  • Interviewing, scheduling and overseeing movers
  • Arranging shipment and storage of goods
  • Packing professionally
  • Unpacking and setting up at the new location
  • Related services such as cleaning, removing trash, shopping, selecting a realtor and staging a home for sale

Most older adults making a transition have not moved in 30, 40 or 50 years and need to downsize considerably. Adults aged 85 and above are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population. At the same time social changes, such as more women working full time, have made it increasingly difficult for family caregivers to provide all the support needed for these transitions.” NASMM website
