Elegance over power!
Hamacher Wines located in Carlton, Oregon was founded in 1995 by owner Eric Hamacher a self proclaimed “Winemaking Gypsy.” Hamacher earned a degree in viticulture and enology at U.C. Davis and immediately set out to expand his winemaking knowledge by producing wines for such notables as Mondavi, Chalone, and Etude. After working 24 vintages throughout the world, Eric realized he belonged back in Oregon, so he packed up and moved to the heart of the Willamette Valley on a quest to create the perfect Pinot Noir. Hamacher released his first single- vineyard bottling in 2005, the 2002 Durant Vineyard Pinot Noir, and has become renowned as a masterful blender of highly-acclaimed wines featured in fine restaurants and private cellars around the world. He is a sought-after producer of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and one of the founders of the LEED certified Carlton Winemakers Studio.
Baby boomer wine aficionados can take pleasure from Hamacher’s signature style of soft tannins and near perfect balance of Pinot Noirs that leave lingering soft satin-like finishes on the palate. Grapes are carefully selected from well-managed vineyards with minimal, gentle handling and low yields which make for alluring individuality and expression like the 2008 “H” series Pinot Noir. Barrel-aged for 12 months, this delicious wine of purity hints of Bing cherries and rich molasses. Created from Dijon clone grapes, the 2007 Hamacher Chardonnay Cuvee Forets Diverses feature aromatics of pear, citrus, and anise leaving mineral-laden crème brulee and apples on the palate! Visit the innovative state-of-the-art eco-friendly cooperative winemaking facility and Tasting Room (the magnificent doors are made from recycled high school gym bleachers) where you can taste some of the finest wines the region produces. Enjoy a taste, a glass, or a “flight” sampling of different varietals, and learn the stories behind the labels. Visit this fabulous website to reserve your visit and you may even get a lesson in green engineering while you’re there!
We visited Eric 2 summers ago and found the Carlton Winemakers Studio to be the perfect place to profile his great wines. Even the kids could enjoy this winery trip. “We loved tasting the grapes and learning about the different varietals. I only wish the climbing wall was for visitors and not just the winemakers!” Taylor Short.
