Food glorious food, hot sausage and mustard!

The Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Markets are the oldest and largest non-profit farmers markets on the Central Coast of California. Founded in 1976, there are two markets in Monterey and one each in Carmel and Aptos. Farmers are certified and sell only what they produce themselves. Everyone involved works together creating rich vibrant experiences for the communities with three spaces donated to local non-profits monthly. The Monterey Bay region is renowned for being a leader in sustainable and organic agricultural practices. Santa Cruz County was at the forefront of the organic movement in 1967 and today has more organic farms than any other county in the state. The region extends from the North Coast of Santa Cruz to the tip of Monterey.

Baby boomer market lovers will enjoy the fact that each market has its own style with select fare from outstanding farms, wineries, and food purveyors. With over 80 vendors, some of whom were pioneers in sustainable and organic farming, there’s an unbelievable selection of top of the line produce, flowers, artisan breads and cheeses, exotic mushrooms, eggs, preserves, fresh fish, oysters, gourmet sauces, pasta, fresh-baked pastries, and fair-trade coffee and teas. The markets have 100% grass-fed, pasture-raised beef, as well as sheep and goat meat- all antibiotic and hormone free. Mouth watering specialty sausages and sauerkraut are available to accompany smoked meats and apple wood smoked bacon. Locally raised chickens, ducks, and turkeys provide delicious free-range eggs. Fresh, local, sustainably-caught wild seafood and hand-selected sashimi-grade imports get rave reviews from us. Fresh handmade pasta and gourmet sauces, local cheeses and the French pastries are heavenly. The Mediterranean climate of the Monterey Bay is perfect for growing olives and award-winning extra virgin olive oil can be purchased here as well. Local honeys include sage, avocado, pine, buckwheat, thistle, blueberry, and wildflower! Don’t forget the beeswax candles. Premium teas include chai and exotic spice blends. Pick up beautiful exotic flowers and plants, and even pottery to adorn your table for feasting on this fabulous bounty from the land.

With so many additional fabulous things to do and explore in the Monterey Bay Area, it’s well worth the trip.
