Quality wines and oils begin with healthy plants!

Michael Seresin was born in Wellington, New Zealand and left in the 60s to settle in Italy where he fell in love with the Italian food and wine culture. This love turned into passion and after researching opportunities for starting a winery in Italy, Seresin realized that quality wines were beginning to emerge out of New Zealand. He headed home, purchased land in the Wairau Valley in the early 90s which eventually became his home vineyard. Planting of vines began immediately, followed by the planting of both native and Tuscan olive varieties and his first vintage was in 1996. Multi-talented Seresin began his career as a cinematographer and has worked on films such as “Bugsy Malone,” “Midnight Express,” “City Hall,” “Angela’s Ashes,” and “Harry Potter – The Prisoner of Azkaban.” We’re delighted that his passion for winemaking never left him.

Baby boomer wine lovers will appreciate that the 45 hectare vineyard Seresin Estate is certified organic with alluvial free-draining Waimakariri soils. The Estate is comprised of three vineyards, olive groves, orchards, vegetable gardens, and is planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Riesling grapes. Organically and bio-dynamically grown fruit is hand-picked and wines are naturally fermented. The use of natural, gentle winemaking creates artisanal wines of high quality, complexity, and individuality. Just west of the Home Vineyard is The Tatou Vineyard purchased in 2000. The 15 hectares are certified organic, and planted with olive trees, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir grapes. The alluvial shingle-soils produce fruit for concentrated aromatic wines with structured tannins. Located in the foothills of the Omaka Valley and purchased in 2001 is the largest of the three vineyards, the certified organic Raupo Creek Vineyard. Fifty-one hectares of clay-rich soils make growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Viognier grapes ideal. An additional twenty-five hectares include farmland, pasture, olive groves, and vegetable patches.

We encourage you take the time to visit this website where through the use of organic and biodynamic techniques,  Seresin enables plants to achieve a healthy, balanced state naturally. We all get to reap the benefits of this alchemical philosophy. We visited in 2006 and after many NZ, French and U.S Vineyard visits, still rank Seresin in the top 5!
