The embodiment of authentic and refreshingly hop, hopping!
Fifth generation brewer and great-great grandson of Henry Weinhard, Minott Weissinger grew up learning about beer from his father Fred Weissinger at the Blitz-Weinhard brewery in Portland Oregon which was sold in 1979. The Weissingers decided to get back into the business and created The Great Northern Brewing Company in Whitefish, Montana where clean air and pure water provides ideal conditions for brewing. Their sole purpose was brewing hand-crafted beers with the strong family tradition dating back to 1856. The Great Northern Brewing Company opened its doors in early 1995.
World renowned architect, Joe Escherick, designed the traditional “gravity flow” three-story brewery which features a brew-house tower housing the brewing vessels and copper kettle which produce 8,000 barrels (248,000 gallons) of fine quality ales and lagers annually. This mostly automated brew house is one of the most complex breweries for its size in the country and is focused on producing the award-winning flagship beer, Black Star.
Baby boomer beer heads will relish Black Star’s double-hopped golden lager American Pilsner based on traditional European lagers. It’s crisp, light, refreshing and brewed with both Bavarian Mittelfrüh and Czech Saaz hops and two row malting barley. It is hopped in a kettle and then again before finishing. Demand for Black Star has become so great that GNBC now brews at a second location in Milwaukee, WI using the same hops, barley and attention to detail. Use Black Star’s website Beer Locator to see if it is available in your area.
After spending the day on Whitefish Lake, golfing, or skiing Whitefish Resort (Big Mountain), baby boomers can savor a bowl of Homemade Beer Chili and quaff other artisanal beers at GNBC’s Black Star Draught House. Host parties at The Mezzanine on the second floor overlooking the brew floor, which is perfect for family and friend gatherings. Salute Montana with the refreshing light lager Wild Huckleberry Wheat that’s blended with real Montana huckleberry juice. The Hellroaring Amber Lager is a medium bodied lager with a touch of caramel malt flavor. Big Fog ESB is the most popular at the Draught House. It is an amber beer loaded with hops. Seasonal and specialty beers include the dark amber, rich and malty SnowGhost Winter Lager and the Frog Hop Fresh Hopped Pale Ale. It is pale golden in color and brewed with fresh hops locally hand-picked at Purple Frog gardens within 24-hours of the brew. Now that’s fresh!
Become a friend of the Furry Fish and pick up a tee. A portion of the proceeds are donated to one of the largest preserved mountain ecosystems in the world, the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation! This funky website also features the Lost Documentaries, a humorous projected history of the beer. Smartly done and an absolute must see! We’re eager for the release of The Great American Road Trip. Watch the trailer. This looks to be a good one. An adventurous man goes out with a film crew on a 6000 mile road trip through the Northwest and discovers 12 stories of people that embody the unique spirit of Black Star. They explore Glacier National Park, brave the wilderness with Bigfoot hunters, take lessons from a Ninja, tame wild mustangs, and more!
On your way out of GNBC, fill a growler to-go, grab a six pack or a keg, and pick up some cool gear. Watch their YouTube videos and check out both of their websites for all the latest.
