Happy Healthy Bones!
Founded in 1984, The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) is the nation’s leading voluntary consumer and community-focused health organization dedicated to the prevention of osteoporosis and broken bones. NOF’s mission is to promote strong bones for life through programs of public and clinician awareness, education, advocacy and research. They achieve this with guidance from their Board of Trustees comprised of leaders in the field of osteoporosis which includes medical and scientific experts along with corporate and foundation trailblazers, political leaders, and consumer advocates. NOF complies with the Good Operating Practices Standards of the National Health Council, meets the standards of the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance, and has been awarded the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence.
Osteoporosis currently affects 10 million Americans and another 34 million are at risk of getting this disease. Research shows that twenty percent of seniors who break a hip die within one year! Experts are predicting that by 2025, osteoporosis will be responsible for roughly three million fractures and $25.3 billion in costs-per-year. Baby boomers and senior boomers are proactive in maintaining their health and well-being and the NOF website is another resource we can all benefit from. Bone Basics; Prevention, Detection, and Management of Osteoporosis; Fall and Broken Bone Prevention; Recovery from Broken Bones; Moving Safely / Spine Protection; and, Quality of Life sections keep baby boomer families and loved ones informed with all the latest informative and educational information, as well as what science and technology holds for us in the future. Osteoporosis is not gender specific and NOF provides important information for both men and women. NOF’s Online Health Community helps people connect with others who have osteoporosis and includes blogs, individual web pages, discussions, and message boards.
Baby boomers and families wishing to get involved can help support awareness by volunteering in your community. Plan and host a fundraising event. Start a support group and NOF will provide the necessary resources, or simply support great events like the annual A Gift from Mothers to Daughters® luncheon. Visit the NOF store where you can pick up a Pearls of Strength® bracelet made from black, fresh-water, cultured 8-9mm pearls. Funds raised from the sales help promote NOF programs. Work-out your bones and incorporate new exercises into your fitness routine with the Skeletal Fitness DVD. Your bones will thank you!
