Physical grace and power!

Former journalist Burr Leonard and her husband/lawyer Carl Diehl opened their first Lotte Berk exercise studio in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1991. Lotte Berk was a German dancer who suffered a back injury and formed the Lotte Berk Method which combined ballet bar with her rehabilitative therapy. Burr has been an avid Lotte Berk Method student since 1981 and in 1991 she became The Lotte Berk Method’s sole licensee. Burr and Carl followed this by co-founding The Bar Method, Inc. in 2000. After reworking and improving sculpting exercises to target muscles without impacting joints, they sold the Connecticut studios. Their newer version of The Lotte Berk Method resulted in the founding of The Bar Method™ in 2001, and their flagship studio opened in the marina neighborhood in San Francisco.

Baby boomer fitness buffs will love this revolutionary workout that integrates the fat burning format of interval training, the muscle shaping technique of isometrics, the elongating principles of dance conditioning, and the science of physical therapy. The result? A sculpted body of firm, elongated muscles; strong, flat abdominals; long, narrow thighs; defined hamstrings; a lifted seat; high muscle definition in the chest and upper arms; improved posture; reduced body fat; and increased energy and stamina. Rejoice! One-hour workouts target all major muscle groups, deliver a high level of overall fitness, and are non-impact. Instructors are specially trained in the healthy patterns of movement, body connection, mental focus, and posture. Exercises utilize a ballet bar and mats and focus on effectiveness, body awareness, and safety.

Can’t find a studio in your area? Then head on over to their online shop and workout at home with DVDs that don’t require ballet bars – just a sturdy chair or portable bar, a soft strap for stretching, and two free weights (2 to 4 pounds each).

Creative options for fitness abound…you just need to do it!
