It is amazing that not since 1960 has anyone explored the Mariana Trench. In 1960 Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard descended about 35,800 feet in a blimp-like submersible. James Cameron, the filmmaker, has dreamt of the same excursion for over seven years. He and his team have planned for this big event for same amount of time. Today he realizes his dream.

To understand the full magnitude of this adventure, surf around the National Geographic site. You can even see a video of his one-man torpedo-like vessel. At 2 PM Eastern Standard time Cameron began his descent! We wish him a fabulous adventure filled with fascinating findings…and we look forward to his updates.

Tomorrow’s blog will follow up with more about our oceans. Watch FaceBook and Twitter for updates on the deep dive!
